AI as an External Thinking Partner
Artificial intelligence is often described in extremes. Depending on who you ask, it’s either going to replace millions of jobs and eventually surpass humanity, or it’s the greatest technological breakthrough since the internet. After spending the past two weeks integrating AI into my daily work, I’ve become convinced that both of those views miss what I believe is the most interesting part of the technology.
AI didn’t become a replacement for my thinking. It became an extension of it. That distinction changed the way I think about artificial intelligence entirely.
When most people hear the phrase “external thinking,” they imagine someone asking a chatbot to write an essay, answer a homework assignment, or generate low-effort content. Those uses certainly exist, but I don’t think they explain why AI is genuinely valuable for many people. They also overlook something humans have been doing for thousands of years.
We’ve always built external places for our thoughts. Long before computers existed, people kept journals, commonplace books, filing cabinets, notebooks, libraries, and card catalogs. These weren’t signs of weak memories. They were tools that extended the mind beyond the limits of immediate recall. Writing has always allowed us to think more deeply because ideas no longer have to be held entirely in working memory.
I think AI belongs to that same tradition. The difference is that instead of merely storing information, it can also help organize it, connect it, question it, and return it when it’s needed. Used wisely, it becomes less like a search engine and more like a thinking partner.
The biggest surprise wasn’t discovering what AI could do. It was discovering how my own mind naturally works.
Over the past several years, I had gradually built habits to compensate for mental clutter without really understanding what I was doing. During the past two weeks, those habits became much more intentional. As I worked with AI every day, I realized that I naturally think in systems rather than isolated tasks. I also think visually. Ideas don’t exist in my mind as neat lists. They connect to one another like rooms in a building or branches of a tree.
Once I understood that, something unexpected happened. My mind became quieter.
That may sound like a small observation, but it has been one of the most noticeable changes I’ve experienced. Instead of trying to remember every unfinished thought, future project, article idea, or question at the same time, those ideas had somewhere else to exist. They were no longer competing for my attention every waking moment.
The thinking remained mine, but the storage became external. I didn’t outsource my judgment. I outsourced the burden of remembering everything at once. That freed my attention for something much more valuable: reasoning.
Looking back, I don’t think AI made me smarter. I think it reduced cognitive overload. There is an important difference.
Our working memory is remarkably limited. We can only actively hold a small number of ideas in our attention at any given moment. When too many unfinished thoughts compete for that limited space, everything becomes harder. Beginning work takes more effort. Switching between projects creates friction. Creative ideas interrupt practical tasks, while practical tasks interrupt creative ones. The result is often mental exhaustion before meaningful work has even begun.
What changed for me wasn’t the amount of work I had. It was where that work lived.
Instead of carrying dozens of partially developed ideas in my head, I began trusting an external cognitive architecture to hold them until I needed them again. The architecture wasn’t replacing my thinking. It was supporting it.
That phrase—cognitive architecture—captures what I think many people are already building without realizing it.
Every person develops some form of external thinking. Some people rely heavily on notebooks. Others keep extensive calendars or whiteboards. Researchers have used index cards for centuries. Writers have filled journals. Businesses create filing systems. Libraries are perhaps the greatest external memory humanity has ever built. Each of these systems allows people to think beyond the limitations of immediate recall.
Artificial intelligence simply adds another layer to that tradition. Instead of only storing information, it can help organize relationships between ideas while still leaving the final judgment to the human being.

I suspect this is one reason AI feels transformative for some people and relatively uninteresting for others. Not every mind works the same way.
Some people naturally organize information internally with remarkable efficiency. Others think through conversation. Some think visually. Others think spatially or systematically. Some people experience significant cognitive overload because they constantly feel responsible for remembering everything. For those people, reducing the demands placed on working memory may be far more valuable than generating content.
That is certainly what happened to me.
One unexpected consequence was that I found myself taking fewer naps during the day. At first I assumed I simply had more energy. Looking back, I think something else had changed.
Mental fatigue isn’t created only by difficult work. Sometimes it comes from carrying too many unfinished thoughts at the same time. Once those thoughts had a trusted place to live outside my immediate attention, I no longer felt responsible for mentally rehearsing them throughout the day. The quiet that followed created more space for sustained thinking than I had experienced in a long time.
That experience also changed my perspective on discussions surrounding ADHD. I’m not interested in claiming that AI is a universal solution or that everyone should use it the same way. Different minds benefit from different tools. But I do wonder whether some people have been looking at AI through too narrow a lens.
Much of the public conversation focuses on replacing workers or automating creativity. I think a more interesting question is whether AI’s greatest contribution is helping different kinds of minds build better cognitive architecture.
That shifts the conversation away from replacement and toward stewardship.
Technology has always extended human capabilities. The wheel extended movement. The printing press extended memory across generations. Computers extended calculation. The internet extended access to information. Perhaps AI’s greatest contribution is extending our ability to organize thought itself.
If that’s true, then the real question isn’t whether AI can think. The real question is whether we are building systems that help human beings think more wisely.
That distinction matters because wisdom has never been created by technology alone. Technology can reduce friction, preserve ideas, and reveal connections, but only human beings can decide which ideas are worth pursuing and which paths are worth following.
For me, AI’s greatest gift wasn’t faster writing or instant answers. It gave my thoughts somewhere to live outside my own mind. Once every idea had a trusted home, my mind no longer needed to function primarily as a storage room. It could become what it was always meant to be: a place for reasoning, creating, and discovering.
